the latinos supported president obama and democratic candidates in general by record margins in 200 2008. this is the kind of issue that can generate enthusiasm and passion among voters of the nation's biggest and fastest-growing minority group. make that into a more solid even democratic constituency. that has to be to their credit. there a lot of shows that overall there was a majority of u.s. voters that favored the arizona law. obviously it works the other way as well. you will have to lock at specific races. you can think of house races, for example, where latinos are a big part of the voting population. this could make a material difference in the fall. you can think of other state-wide contests in which it could play the other way. >> in fact what you could see is say short-term effect that favors the anti-immigration forces, but long-term demographically democratic pears and those who oppose the arizona law would clearly have advantages just as we saw in 1994 and pete pills on's race in california with the support of that. how long-term it hurt the republican party in california.
